The Chairman of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), Mr. John Opnjo Benjamin has stated that they are now set to win the 2012 Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Councils Elections in the country.
He made this statement while welcoming the Presidential Candidate, retired brigadier General Julius Maada Bio and his Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Kadi Sesay at the party’s national headquarters at Wallace Johnson Street in Freetown on Friday, November 25 this year.
He also stated that they have already completed their assignment to bounce back to power in 2012.
He admitted that they have proven to the world that they are not tribal, violent, religious intolerant, gender or regionally biased.
He also explained that they are well composed with their “One man, one woman, one Muslim one Christian, one Northerner, one Southerner, one Mende one Temne, and one SLPP one gender balance,” to grab power in 2012.
He assured the women of the party’s commitment in empowering them and to create the example for others to follow.
In her statement, the party’s National Women’s Leader, Mrs. Isata Jabbie Kabbah, admitted that it was a big day for women in the SLPP and the country at large as they have a set the pace for others to follow.
“Choosing Dr. Kadi Sesay is not only a blessing for us but for all women in the country irrespective of political affiliations region or religion,” she pointed out.
She stressed that they wanted to register their appreciation to the flagbearer for choosing a woman to serve as his running mate.
Responding to the comments, the flagbearer Retired brigadier General Julius Maada Bio intimated that that to run a Government is not an easy task as its takes a serious team to achieve such a challenge.
He observed that women have the same right to serve as partners in development which is why no serious leader will succeed if he fails to give women prominence in the affairs of the country. “I chose Dr. Kadi Sesay because of the belief and confidence I have in her as a woman and as a person. I believe she can do a good work if given the chance,” he enthused.
He also stated that critics have been describing the SLPP as a tribalistic party that only cares about the Mende people which he said is a very wrong perception as has been demonstrated in the choosing of Dr. Kadi Sesay, a Northerner and a Temne.
In her comments, Dr. Kadi Sesay expressed her appreciation to all the women inSierra Leonefor coming out to welcome her and support her in her endaevour to become Vice President of this country in 2012.
She also thanked Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio for choosing her to serve as his Vice Presidential Candidate in the upcoming elections.
She assured the people of this country that she was going to ensure that women’s issues are taken seriously in the country.
She disclosed that she has the full support of both men and women in theNorthern Provinceand called on the Eastern and Southern Provinces and the Western Area to support her.
