Kambia District gets SLAJ Coordinator

On Sunday, June 10, the Regional President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Northern Region, Mr. Stanley Bangura Jr. visited the Kambia District to first sympathize with the a senior Journalist and Editor of Concord Times Newspaper, Mr. Moses Kargbo, for the loss of his mother and, secondly, to meet with SLAJ members in the Kambia District for the first time since his election.

Addressing his colleagues at the Kolenten conference hall in Kambia, he said it was a pleasure for him to meet with them to appoint a SLAJ Coordinator in the Kambia District, discuss issues affecting them and sensitize them on the new direction of the organisation.

He encouraged them to continue the good work in accordance with the Code of Practice of the independent Media Commission (IMC).

He appealed to them to be very impartial in their coverage of the electoral activities before, during and after the November 17 elections.

Mr. Bangura reminded them that at last year’s annual general meeting of SLAJ it was resolved that each District should appoint somebody to serve as District Coordinator, explaining that that was why he was in Kambia to hang heads and come out with a name they think can better represent their interests both at regional and national levels.

He also stated that he was happy for their unanimous agreement to appoint Mr. Gibril Gottor as their District Coordinator.

He concluded by emphasizing the need for all members to pay their monthly dues, which he said is very crucial for the continued existence of the organisation, stressing that only paid upembers will benefit from opportunities that come to the organisation.

In his statement, the Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Reporters Union (SLRU), Mr.  Abu Bakarr Singateh Jalloh, implored new Reporters to endaevour to become members of the union as there are many advantages they stand to benefit from.

He revealed that they have the mandate to recommend and endorse applicants who want to become members of SLAJ.
