Residents of the Allen Town Community yesterday lambasted the Minister Health and Sanitation, Mrs. Zainab Hawa Bangura, for what they referred to as poor and deplorable state of their Community Health Centre.
They stated that the Centre, which hosts over 500 pregnant women, lactating mothers, under-five children and other patients, lacks basic facilities like beds, water and electricity supply.
They also explained that even the structure, which they described as a dilapidated building, has not been refurbished for a very long time.
In an interview with AYV, a youth leader in the community by the name of Mr. Ibrahim Sesay revealed that most pregnant women who go to the centre to deliver their babies suffer a lot during labour because of the lack of proper facilities at the place.
He blamed the Ministry of Health and Sanitation for the anomaly, underlining that although Allen Town is the gateway to the capital city, Freetown, even the road leading to the health centre is in a deplorable state.
He reiterated that the absence of modern facilities at the hospital has resulted to the community not benefiting from the free health care scheme.
In her remarks, a pregnant woman, Madam Umu Hawa Conteh, revealed that she would have died during labour but for the timely intervention of her family members who hired a vehicle that conveyed her to the Rokupr Government Hospital at kissy.
When AYV contacted her for her comments, the Mammy Queen of the Allen Town Market, Mrs. Memunatu Yaa Umu Kamara, said they are not benefiting directly from the free health care scheme, pointing out that it is not politics but mismanagement that is the main reason for this.
“We are appealing to Government and other stakeholders to come to our aid by improving the health centre so that it will serve its purpose in our midst,” she said.
A Nurse at the centre, who prefers anonymity, told AYV that she blamed the Health Ministry staff as they are not doing anything to see that the centre gets the necessary drugs and equipment to help them effectively carry out their work.
